Stop 4 Poster 3

This poster shows the distribution of the six astronomical stations set up along the West Line (the False 45th). A seventh station was set up in Montreal. How many of these could view the summit of Jay’s Peak (using telescopes) is not presently known, although Ogden, Richford, Rouse’s Point and Montreal are good bets. The inset shows a naked eye view of Jay Peak from where the Ogden astronomical station was located. As this spot is now forested a drone was used to take this image. In 1845 it was pasture and obviously was chosen to have a clear line of sight at ground level to the summit.
